Club History

Moreton Town football club was formed pre-1908 and played in the Mid Cotswold League .

Records show Moreton Town joined the Cheltenham League from the 1927 producing a winning team every decade becoming league winners in: 1931, 1947, 1954 and1968 and Cup winners in: 1930, 1935 and 1954.

They moved to its current location on London Road when Lord Dulverton donated a piece of land to the Playing Fields Association in 1935 for the use of the town football team.

The ground had a wooden pavilion built and this remained as the changing rooms and refreshment stall until the mid-sixties. The ground then had some major development in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

A pitch barrier was added and floodlights were installed making it one of the first grounds outside Cheltenham and Gloucester to have floodlighting. A new Clubroom was built, and a covered stand was added enabling the Club to join the Hellenic League in 1970.

The Club then had a successful period in the Hellenic League winning the Premier League on 4 occasions and being runners-up six times. They also won the Gloucestershire Trophy 3 times.

The Ground was bizarrely shared with Newport AFC (formally Newport County) for 1989-90 season when they were expelled from playing in Wales.

A new covered stand was built and due to be filled with seating when Moreton Town folded in 1994 leaving a large financial legacy. The Ground remained in use being hired out for evening games and a Veterans Team in the Hellenic League.

Moreton Rangers was formed in 1997 as an Under 8s youth team playing on the old Moreton Town ground. Unable to use the Moreton Town name due to the previous club’s financial demise the players in this young team voted on the new name.

The club soon went from strength to strength as it expanded to 4 youth teams by 2000 and teams went on to be successful in the Witney and District Youth League. In 2004 it was decided to start an adult team. The side entered its first season in the Cheltenham League Division 2, finishing mid table and winning the County Intermediate Cup.

Disaster struck the Ground in 2009 when the changing rooms were burnt down in an arson attack. The Club then raised £72,000 to build new changing rooms just in time to allow them to be promoted to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League.

Moreton Rangers joined the Hellenic League Division Two in 2015 and started working towards obtaining F.A. Step Six status for the Ground. A new Clubroom was built, and club won the League and County Cup in 2019 so were accepted into the First Division West a Step Six League. In 2020 new Floodlights were installed replacing the 1970s vintage ones and a fifty seat stand was built to comply with the F.A. Grading standards for Step Six.

The club is now lucky enough to be supporting 11 youth sides plus 2 adult sides.
